A term-long study of the cornerstone of Western literature and culture. With Emily Wilson's celebrated 2023 translation as the set text, composed in iambic pentameter, the course will include close readings of key passages, group discussions on themes such as wrath, the brutality of war, honour and eternal glory, as well as an exploration of the poem’s cultural context and its enduring influence on art, literature, and psychology. Please bring a copy of Emily's translation (Homer. The Iliad. Translated by Emily Wilson, W. W. Norton & Company, 2023) to the class.
