Our Charity
For almost fifty years, The Rothsay Education Centre has been a place where people come together to learn, create and connect. From arts and languages to wellbeing and practical skills, we offer an inspiring environment where curiosity and community sit at the heart of every experience.
What began in 1977 with just eight courses has grown into a thriving community offering more than 60 classes, workshops, trips and events each term. At its heart, The Rothsay Education Centre remains rooted in the belief that learning should be inspiring, accessible and lifelong.
Today, The Rothsay Education Centre continues to bring together people from across Bedford and the surrounding area through a shared love of learning, creativity and conversation. Alongside its wide programme of classes and workshops, the Centre offers a welcoming social environment where friendships are formed, ideas are exchanged and new interests can flourish at every stage of life.
Our Journey
1977
Our Beginnings
First Opened
The Centre was the brainchild of Angela Hector following her MSc in Ageing, Retirement and Education. It first opened in 1977 with 164 students and eight courses. Cranfield University and Charles Wells Ltd were early partners and by late 1977 there were 360 students and £9 in the bank.
2015
A New Chapter
Our New Home
The Centre was officially registered as a charity and, in 2015, acquired the lease of 6 Rothsay Gardens, securing its home for future generations until 2140. This important milestone marked the beginning of a new chapter, providing a permanent base for learning, creativity and community activities.
2016
