Alice in Wonderland is a children’s classic. It has never gone out of fashion. The story contains a fabulous gallery of characters from the White Rabbit to the Queen of Spades, all a delightful mixture of whimsy and nonsense, vividly brought to life by John Tenniel’s illustrations. But Alice’s interactions with these various creatures also reflect aspects and concerns of Victorian society and it is these, for example the White Rabbit’s obsession with time, which will be our focus.
