Maria Garzon (Prof)

Maria Garzón is a distinguished Spanish concert pianist celebrated for her artistry, commitment to rediscovering neglected repertoire, and her wide-ranging international career. Educated in Madrid, Salzburg, Cologne, and London, she is now based in London.

Her career has taken her to many of the world’s most prestigious stages, including Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and the Athenaeum in both Madrid and Athens. She has been a guest artist at leading international festivals such as Salzburg, Carthage, Thessaloniki, Granada, Buxton, and Malvern, and her performances have been broadcast on major networks including the BBC, Classic FM, WDR, NDR, RAI, RTVE, and NBC.

Professor Garzón’s discography reflects both her versatility and her passion for advocacy. She has championed the music of Czech composer Jan Ladislav Dussek, recording his complete piano sonatas and piano concertos with the Neue Reinishes Kamerorchester for the Koch label in coproduction with WDR. She has also brought new attention to the piano works of Edward Elgar, including the original version of the Enigma Variations, a recording praised by Gramophone for its “achingly nostalgic” interpretations.

Her albums also celebrate the rich traditions of Spanish music, with works by Soler, Albéniz, Granados, de Falla, Rodrigo, and Alejandro Yagüe. More recently, she has turned to the poignant works of Viktor Ullmann, producing both a documentary, Viktor Ullmann – Biography of a Recording, and recordings of his complete piano works for the Heritage label.

Alongside her performance career, Garzón is an experienced teacher, mentor and lecturer. She has given numerous masterclasses at the Royal Academy of Music and the City Lit in London, and the music conservatoires in Uralsk, Barbados, and Beijing, for example, where her insights into both performance and interpretation have been highly valued. In 2018, she performed at the Spanish Academy in Rome in tribute to Alejandro Yagüe, combining Spanish repertoire with her trademark artistry and thoughtful commentary. Today, Maria Garzón continues to combine performance, teaching, and festival direction, establishing herself not only as an interpreter of the great piano repertoire but also as an advocate for underrepresented voices in music history.
