Melody is the part of music that most people say they comprehend and like. Many listeners identify ‘melody’ as the primary source of their enjoyment in music. But what’s in a tune? How does the style of music affect what goes on melodically? How are the melodies in Mozart Symphonies, Wagner operas, folk song and popular songs related? In this course we will see how melody is used and manipulated by composers as diverse as Monteverdi and Monty Norman, ask questions: What do they have in common? Does their approach differ significantly? How do composers keep melodic interest alive in their music? This promises to be the most tuneful course ever!
