Colette’s colourful life has recently been the subject of a film, starring Keira Knightly (2018). We shall study her early novel The Vagabond (1910). Elizabeth Smart’s By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept (1945), a very moving account of her love affair with the English poet George Barker (1913-1991), has long been admired as a classic of lyrical prose, Angela Carter hailing it as a masterpiece.
