We know that John Bunyan was born in Harrowden, and moved to Elstow and then Bedford (and prison). We know that for a very long time St Peter de Merton church was on the northern fringe of the town, and Bunyan’s St Cuthbert’s Street was on the eastern. But how and why did the town expand, perhaps to take in YOUR street? Margaret Badley’s autumn ‘Turbulent Bedford’ goes to about 1840 and Paul will pick up from there.
