Eliot’s Four Quartets are justly regarded as the supreme achievement of his poetic career. In them, the key question of his earlier career, how to find meaning and significance in what he considered to be a cultural waste land, is finally answered. Whether it is answered in a satisfactory manner is another matter. But there can be no doubt about the magnificent artistry of these poems nor their profound meditations on time and spirituality. These will be the focus of this course but we will also be referring to the traditions that Eliot drew on and the importance of seeing the Four Quartets in the context of the Second World War.
