The late 1870’s saw 3 very different French painters rise to prominence: Manet, considered the father of Modernism, Caillebotte an artist inspired by early photography and Tissot who incorporated both impressionism and realism into his genre paintings of London high society. Each reflected modern, urban life across classes in Paris & London and recorded their often critical thoughts on society within their paintings.
We will consider the unconventional subject matter of Manet, explore the isolation of urban Paris frequently depicted by Caillebotte’s pieces and compare them with Tissot’s sumptuous genre paintings of high society.
