A dome confers distinction on a building like nothing else. We recall the domes on St Peter’s, the Dome of The Rock, The Capitol in Washington, our own St Paul’s and many more. This talk focuses on the structure of three outstanding domes, from Ancient Rome, the Byzantine Empire and the Renaissance. How were such vast, gravity-defying constructions ever built?
