This course will explore how a diverse and patchwork range of states became united in an Italian state by 1870. The role of nationalism and the heroic figures such as Garibaldi and Mazzini will be explored, along with the role of the Papacy and changing balance of international relations in Europe on the mid nineteenth century. Did Italy reunite herself or was it mainly the achievement of others, especially France? Was this change a result of popular will or were most Italians largely bystanders and resistant to change?
