The Symphony is one of the best-loved achievements of Western Art. Music lovers know what a symphony is, but what is the difference between a twenty-minute symphony by Haydn and a ninety-minute symphony by Mahler? Schumann and Shostakovich wrote things they called symphonies, but what have they got in common? Can we learn something by considering symphonies between 1750 and the present day as part of an ongoing tradition? We will survey the development of the symphony and see why composers have reserved some of their greatest musical thoughts for this remarkably popular and robust form.
