This course will explore the absolutist instincts of James Ist and Charles Ist leading to the start of the Civil War in 1642. We will analyse the reasons for the trial and execution of Charles Ist and the controversial personality of Oliver Cromwell. Why did the experiment with republicanism fail and why did continuing religious conflict cast a pall over the later years of Charles II and lead to the deposition of his brother, James II, in the Glorious Revolution?
