Master builders of the Gothic era quickly learned how to build high stone walls, but the drive to pierce them with ever-larger windows required new approaches, and daring. Somehow, intuition and hard-won experience came together to create the mighty buildings which compel our admiration to this day. Understanding the core structure enables us to see the cathedrals of Europe with fresh eyes and renewed interest.
