We all like a good tune. But the longest tunes last only a minute or so. How then does Mozart hold our attention for twenty minutes without seeming repetitive? How does Brahms keep us spellbound for an hour? This course will examine how music from Bach to Shostakovich is organised on a large scale. An architect designs his buildings to look good; but he also needs to ensure they don’t fall down. A composer, likewise, must give music a firm structural base if it is to endure. We will de-mystify sonatas, rondos, variations, and the other structures used to give music coherence.
