The history of the world, according to Karl Marx, was a history of class struggles, but the solution seemed to most, if not Marx himself, greater participation in the government and governance of society, along with a way of ensuring that government was representative. To put it bluntly democratic, then liberal democratic. We will trace this growth from Greek and Roman times, through to the USA, Europe and wider. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the path to global liberal democracy looked clear. Since then, however, it seems instead to be under challenge and retreating across the world. We will look at its growth, its present struggles and try and see if there is a path forward.
