Over the centuries Ireland has experienced a great deal of conflict and this has resulted in a variety of protests. This course will look at some of the ways in which this protest has been expressed, exploring literary texts as well as speeches, letters, songs and personal reflections. Writers such as Swift, Yeats and Heaney will feature, as will political figures such as Padraig Pearse and Robert Emmet. An historical framework will be behind our examination, but it is very much a course about the ways that language is exploited rather than a History lesson. No prior reading is necessary – the texts will be read during our sessions.
