On October 7th 2023, the longest war between Israel and the Palestinians began. At the time of writing, the latest ceasefire, in this nearly 150 year old conflict, provides some respite for both sides. But the underlying causes will take a long time to address and solve. In this workshop, we will focus on the rise of Jewish and Arab nationalism at the end of the 19th century, how various Arab and non-Arab states have been involved, the main wars between the two sets of people and why sustained peace has proved impossible. It is a complex narrative, but this workshop will help you make greater sense of the events and characters behind the news which is never far from our lives.
