This 5-week course focuses on one of the most talked-about novels of the 20thCentury: The Handmaid’s Tale. Margaret Atwood’s award-winning novel, published in 1985, is set in the near-future in a totalitarian state. It is complicated, relevant and disturbing and Atwood, a Canadian writer, poses a number of probing questions about some key aspects of Western society. The tutor of this course, Dr Sharon Priestley, is a Canadian-American who will guide students in discussions. How should we interpret this powerful novel and how does it relate to British readers today? Join our discussions and find out!
