Both Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald saw themselves as rivals for being the great American novelist in the century that was to be considered by many to be the American Century. Their fortunes fluctuated throughout their lives, and their literary reputations have fluctuated since their deaths. In this course we consider Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms (1929) and Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night (1934), as we take a look at their friendship and rivalry.
