Everyone has heard of Monet and Manet and Giverny, but what about the gardens of Sorolla, Frieseke, or Kadinsky, or the wilder American response to the call to the art of ‘plein air’? Did plants replace paints or vice versa? And did the shimmering heat of southern France or the dull clouds of London enforce a new kind of impressionism on horticulture? And why did society portrait painter Singer Sargeant go all ‘impressionist’ when painting gardens? As Voltaire said ‘il faut cultiver notre jardin’ and this course will do just that!
