This course will explore the evolution of the British monarchy in the nineteenth century from its highly unpopular status in the late Georgian period to its transformation of mass appeal by the time of the coronation of Edward VII in 1902. The course will look at personalities of key figures such as George IV, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and analyse how the monarchy was transformed from a largely private institution to where the invention of tradition gave it a new public role as the decorative part of the British state and Empire.
