This course will examine how the hopes of a new international order in 1919 were dashed in the inter war period. What were the long-term consequences of the peace treaties of 1919–23? Was the League of Nations doomed to failure? How important was the Great Depression in the outbreak of war? The British and French reaction to Hitler’s foreign policy will be analysed and whether an alternative strategy might have avoided war debated as well as the foreign policies of Italy, USSR and Japan.
