This course looks at two important novels published nearly a century apart, one set in New England the other in the South. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter (1850), was described by D. H. Lawrence as a “perfect work of the American imagination” and Flannery O’Connor’s ‘Wise Blood’ (1952) has been describedby Anthony Burgess as a novel “like no other – the individuality is intense, the comedy fierce, the truth undeniable”.
