This 5-week course is based on Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments, the long-awaited sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. The Testaments is a joint winner of the 2019 Booker Prize for Fiction. It continues the story of some characters introduced to us in The Handmaid’s Tale in a dystopian and misogynistic world. Atwood explores the issues of how society can sanction the degradation and moral compromising of women and much more. The novel raises sometimes shocking questions, and through our discussions, our goal is to find some answers. The sessions will be led by Dr Sharon Priestley, a tutor who can offer some insights from her Canadian-American perspective. Atwood has revealed that this novel is full of hope; join this course to help us find it! It is recommended that those on this course will have already read The Handmaid’s Tale.
