Since its invention in late Renaissance Italy, opera has fascinated public and composers alike, despite almost insurmountable problems surrounding its composition and production. Many were written as part of a production line and languish in deserved obscurity; but when circumstances are auspicious, the results can be up there with the finest artistic achievements of mankind.
This is a personal selection of ten of those masterworks: I will disclose the individual operas at the beginning of the course, but we will start in the 17th Century and end in the 20th, examining one opera in detail each week, exploring its music and the circumstances surrounding its genesis.
