The relationship between Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath was one of the most discussed, and controversial, literary topics on the twentieth century. Shortly before his death in 1999 Hughes broke his poetic silence on Plath with the eighty eight poems which comprise ‘Birthday Letters’. This four week course will examine the collection with a mixture of reading and discussion. There will, of course, be some focus on the events of their lives but the main focus will be on the poems themselves. Participants will need a copy of the collection.
