Does Putinism exist, or does Russia’s leadership simply reflect the will and views of its vast population? What is the overlap between Russia’s political and business elites, and who are the key figures involved? How has post-Cold War Russia emerged as a serious threat to European security?
The course will address these questions by examining the rise to power of Vladimir Putin, and studying the nature of the state which he leads. In doing so, it will also seek to understand today’s geopolitical climate in Europe, and whether or not NATO continues to be relevant to the security architecture of Europe in an age of emerging regional powers and coalitions of the willing.
