Robert Schumann was the most innovative and imaginative composer of piano music at the dawn of the Romantic age. Clara Wieck was the finest pianist in Europe for over half of the 19th Century. As a couple they were one of the most formidable forces in music. The turbulent and ultimately tragic course of their lives mirrors the romantic world their music described. We will examine their music and lives and some of the lesser-known corners of the sound world they created during one of the most exciting times in musical history.
