There is a big question about how much of Pericles Shakespeare wrote. But whatever his contribution, he is credited with being the chief author of the play. And it is a strange one, involving as it does incest, kidnap, starvation, shipwrecks, death and children lost and found. Some commentators do not like the play because of its episodic nature and certain lewd scenes in Act 4 which they consider to be ‘un-Shakespearian.’ Others, like T. S. Eliot and Harold Bloom, have found a profound beauty in the play and some have considered it to be Shakespeare’s most moving drama. This course will discuss the authorship of the play, its relation to Greek tragedy, its themes, and its singular artistry.
