Course Code: 1XMA10B19
Start Date: 06/01/2020Day of the Week:
Length in weeks: 10
Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm
The 10 week course is broken down into four sections:
Section 1: Basic Materials Properties – Mechanical, thermal, optical and electrical properties are described using real materials and the precise vocabulary of materials testing is introduced and explained.
Section 2: Typical Materials – Four main groups of materials are identified: ceramics, metals, polymers and composites. Typical members of each group are investigated in an attempt to relate their properties to microscopic structure.
Section 3: Applications of materials – case studies – The choice of materials and associated fabrication techniques in some key applications are examined in order to illustrate how materials are selected for specific situations: Transport, buildings, medicine, clothing
Section 4: New materials – The final section will look at the future of materials.
Wherever possible the sessions will include practical demonstrations and experiments.
