Little is known about the real Mary Magdalene, a name which probably comes from the town of Magdala, a fishing town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. She is mentioned 12 times in the Gospels and was a follower of Jesus. She was also present at his crucifixion and the resurrection. And that’s about it. The church conflated her with the ‘sinful woman’ who anointed Jesus’ feet in Luke 7:36-50, an ‘error’ which was corrected in 1969. The Da Vinci Code brought Mary Magdalene to popular consciousness and one of the Gnostic gospels found at Nag Hammadi is devoted to Mary’s conversations with Jesus. This four-week course will look at how Mary has been represented in the Bible and in art and at how she is portrayed in popular culture. We will also consider whether a knowledge of Mary affects our understanding of Jesus.
