Despite writing only nine symphonies and a handful of other works, Gustav Mahler is today regarded as one of the great Romantic composers. In his day he was probably better known as one of the first global superstar conductors. Born in a Bohemian backwater, by the end of his life he internationally famous, at the same time as being one of Sigmund Freud’s first psychoanalysis patients. His music is regarded as standing at the crossroads between romanticism and modernism. We will examine his life and works and try to explain the appeal of this extraordinary genius.
