Letter-writing was well-established among the Greek and Roman middle classes by the end of the 4th century BC. We can learn much about their social history, private passions and grievances, as well as the expectations of the political and ruling classes. We will consider private and public letters, those intended for wider literary publication, ‘pseudo-letters’ written much later and mediaeval communications between clerics. No previous knowledge is required, simply an interest in people and history.
