This course will focus on this most turbulent period in German history from the proclamation of the German Empire in 1871 to the demise of the Third Reich in 1945. The policies of the new Bismarckian Germany will be examined and the problems faced by Wilhelm II’s regime in 1914.
Why did the democratic Weimar Republic fail to establish itself after the First World War? To what extent did the Nazi Party have the support of the German people and to what extent was the fall of the regime inevitable after 1939?
This is a repeat of a course from the Autumn Term.
