Nanda Gray is nine when in 1908 she is sent to a convent school on the edge of London to be educated by the Sisters of the Five Wounds. This is a school story which is wonderfully compelling and atmospheric, with daily life in the convent meticulously captured by our innocent narrator, but it is chilling rather than jolly, and raises issues as significant today as when it was first published in 1933. “Intense, troubling, semi-miraculous—a work of art” according to Elizabeth Bowen, and much to discuss: please join us!
