The Christian Church was ‘Oriental’ long before it became ‘European’. For centuries the Eastern churches far surpassed the Latin West in numbers, scholarship and artistic achievement. After the Arab conquest (7th.c.) they became a disadvantaged minority, ceased to thrive, and were discounted, even forgotten, in the West, coming back into view only very recently when they are threatened with extinction. The course will explore their history, culture and political experience in all its diversity. Will they survive, and does it matter?
