This course follows the story of a country that was once among the most progressive and liberal in the world, yet plunged into civil war in the 1930s, experienced widespread poverty and brutal repression throughout the 1940s and 1950s and ultimately suffered the longest-lasting dictatorship in 20th-century Europe.
