Although he has been described as an impressionist, Degas called himself a realist. Certainly, his subject matter is grittier than the depictions of nature or the leisure activities of the bourgeoisie which can be found in the paintings of a Manet or a Renoir. This three-day course will provide an introduction to Degas’ life and work. The painter is most associated with dance – the subject of over half his paintings – but he also portrayed milliners, laundresses and the less genteel side of Parisian life. Degas was a sculptor too and one of his most famous pieces is Little Dancer of 14 Years. New research has revealed the fascinating back story of this art work so why not come along and find out what it is, along with lots of other information about this ‘reluctant impressionist’.
