In this three week course, students will learn a systematic approach to drawing the portrait from life. Week 1 introduces the basic structure of the portrait and facial planes, with subsequent weeks focusing on the anatomy of individual facial features. By the end of the course, students will complete detailed feature studies and a fully rendered portrait from life, grounded in a strong understanding of anatomy, proportion, and value. Some drawing experience is required.
Students will need willow charcoal; charcoal pencil (medium); white chalk pencil; putty rubber; sharpener / sharpening block; A2 coloured paper (cream, grey, sand preferable) – at least 5 sheets. Extra:- sketchbook and pencils (B / HB). Students are welcome to complete their final project in a material other than charcoal, if they wish. Feel free to discuss this with your tutor during the course.
