Goya is a truly fascinating figure. Generally regarded as the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th century he is seen as the last of the ‘Old Masters’ and the first of the ‘moderns’. He was a court painter who became a chronicler of the horrors of the Peninsular War (1807-1818). The experience affected him deeply and was a factor, along with his deafness and depression, in the bleak mood of his later works. And yet these paintings somehow remain strangely life affirming. Come and find out more.
