Hector Berlioz was the absolute quintessence of the romantic composer. He burst upon the European musical scene in the 1830s, yet despite writing some of the most spectacular and important music of the 19th Century, struggled to get heard. Taking as our starting point his remarkable – and often outrageously hilarious – memoirs, we will examine his life and work and try to work out why, even now, there is so much to be learned and understood about this under-appreciated composer. If you don’t know the music of this towering genius (or only know a few of his major pieces) do join us. You will be surprised at the depth and quality of his wonderful music. If you DO know his music, you will not need persuading that he truly is one of the greatest 19th Century composers. Whichever category you fall into, I can promise a glorious treat for the ears!
