Bede’s work is the first account of Anglo-Saxon England ever written. While its primary subject is the establishment of Christianity in the country it is also rich in detail about life in the 8th century: battles, eclipses, plagues, invasions and so forth. People then believed the most extraordinary things but so they do in our own day. This makes Bede’s work as much about the psychology of belief as theology. It is contemporary as it is historical.
