One way of characterising modernist art is to say that it is intellectual rather than beautiful. But this claim ignores how each age defines beauty differently. Nevertheless, we are always tempted to ask whether beauty has any enduring qualities. This one-day course will examine several paintings by Manet, Gauguin and Cezanne and others to see if beauty is transitory or transcendent, whether it is peculiar to its time, or whether it is beyond time.
