Augustine was a passionate man with a brilliant intellect, who led a troubled life, never settled, always a ‘wanderer’, constantly embattled against his opponents. He shaped Western thought for over a millennium, and still today his ideas stimulate thinkers of all persuasions, ideas about Time, and its relation to Eternity, the problem of evil, the ‘mysteries of the human heart’, the Self, the pre-eminence of Memory, the freedom of the Will , the nature and purposes of government and the State. I hope to show how his ideas and his lived experiences are inextricably entangled.
