Much of the art and architecture of Ancient Athens can still be seen, either in the modern city of Athens, or in museums world wide. The Athenian historian Thucydides said that future generations would find it very hard to believe that Sparta had ever been a powerful city, so few were the monuments there which would survive to be admired, whereas he predicted that Athens would be judged to have been twice as powerful, so rich would be her artistic heritage. He was right. In this course we shall explore architecture, sculpture and painted vases, mainly from the 5th and 4th century BCE.
This course will be delivered via Zoom.
