Caravaggio was the bad boy of Renaissance art. He was often arrested for brawling, vandalism, non- payment of debts and insulting the city guards. He also committed murder, killing Ranuccio Tommasoni, a gangster from a wealthy family, in a duel. But Caravaggio was also an artist of genius who combined realistic observation with dramatic lighting in his biblical scenes, giving them a new energy and meaning. This one-day course will look at the life of Caravaggio, the development of his art, his influence on painters like Rembrandt and why, despite the remote subject matter, his work still speaks to us today.
