Two genocides frame the blood-soaked 20th.c.(1915 and 1994 ). Both need to be understood in a wider perspective; Armenia, that of tangled relations between Armenians, Ottomans and Russians, Rwanda that of colonial disputes and legacies in the Great Lakes region. What role did religion play: were Armenians Christian victims of Muslim antagonism? Rwanda was the most Christianised country in Africa, and yet…? How far were leading powers involved, Germany and Russia in the case of Armenia, and Belgium, France, the Vatican, the UN, in Rwanda? ‘No genocide ever has an end’. What are the lasting consequences for both peoples in search of redress?
