Viktor Ullmann (1898–1944) was an Austrian‑born composer whose music blends modernist ideas with late‑Romantic expression and classical clarity. A student of Arnold Schoenberg and later Alois Hába, he developed a distinctive voice across piano works, chamber music, songs, and opera. Deported to Theresienstadt in 1942, Ullmann continued to compose and contribute to the camp’s musical life, creating some of his most powerful works, including Der Kaiser von Atlantis. Murdered in Auschwitz in 1944, his music—suppressed for decades—now stands as a testament to artistic resilience and creativity under persecution.
Maria Garzon, who has recorded many of Ullmann’s works, will introduce his life and music before performing selected pieces.
