The Bach’s Goldberg Variations continue to beguile and inspire audiences around the world. In this lecture/recital, they will be discussed and performed by the Spanish pianist Maria Garzón.
J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, composed in 1741, have long been revered for their intellectual depth and emotional power. The work has inspired countless musicians and composers over the centuries and continues to be regarded as a pinnacle of the keyboard repertoire.
The composition represents one of the crowning achievements of Baroque music and keyboard artistry. This extraordinary work features an Aria followed by 30 variations, each showcasing a unique blend of technical brilliance and artistic expression. The finale returns to the Aria to create a powerful sense of closure, offering listeners a profound reflection on the intricate journey through Bach’s genius.
Maria Garzon has recently recorded this work for the Heritage Music Label, released in February 2026. She will provide an introductory lecture on the work and its significance in the history and development of keyboard music, followed by a performance of the work.
